Former St. Brigid’s manager Anthony Cunningham has publicly addressed speculation about his health.

Speaking on the GAA Social podcast with Thomas Niblock and Oisín McConville, Cunningham acknowledged that there were some “wild rumours over the last three or four months that I had cancer and I was sick and that type of stuff”.

However, he insisted that the speculation “was nothing further from the truth”.

“It’s a bit of a shock when you hear that type of stuff. I don’t know where it ever came from on day one.

“I’d like to acknowledge all the concerned people who rang and contacted me to see if I was ok and wished me well. I’m the finest. I’m perfect…couldn’t be fitter,” he said.

Cunningham, who led St. Brigid’s to provincial glory this year and were within a kick of a ball of an All-Ireland title, also revealed that even some of his former playing colleagues were contacting him.

“Quite a lot of them rang me saying 'Are you alright?'. About a week there it was constant. What can you do? You can’t do a thing you know. Just to tell them all I’m fine, I couldn’t be better.

“I train, I work out, I try and do as much as I can. I work in the university (ATU) in a research group. One of the pluses of the college is that there is an indoor and outdoor running track within 50 metres of my desk...and there is a gym there,” he added.

When asked about his thoughts on where the rumours may have originated, the former Roscommon senior football manager and Galway hurling boss said: “I guess it’s part of modern life with communications systems as well...", referring to social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook.
