Average speed safety cameras installed along the N5

Commissioning and testing has begun for average safety cameras on the N5.
An Garda Síochána has confirmed that commissioning and testing has begun for average safety cameras on the N5.
In addition, the locations for nine new static speed cameras have been revealed, one of them being on the N17 outside Claremorris.
Gardai say that commissioning, testing and validation of the infrastructure and safety cameras has commenced and will continue for a number of weeks.
The average safety camera sites, one has also been installed on the N3, have been chosen because they meet the criteria as being high collision sites with numerous road traffic collisions, involving injury, serious injury and fatalities.
“Average safety cameras are intended to change driver behaviour, reducing average speed of road users and the number of collisions that occur, making roads safer for all road users and decreasing the impact of speed on local communities,” Gardai said this morning.
Average safety cameras have been installed on the N5 between Lislackagh and Cuilmore, Swinford and on the N3 between Kilduff and BIllis, Cavan.
They work by monitoring a vehicle's speed over a certain distance, rather than at a single point.
Unlike static safety camera detection which measures the motorists speed at one particular point along the road, average safety cameras monitor a driver’s average speed while driving between two points.
Drivers detected exceeding the speed limit i.e. travelling from point A to point B too quickly, are issued with a fixed charge notice which, when processed, assigns three penalty points to the drivers licence and a fine of up to €160.
Meanwhile, nine static speed safety cameras will be fully operational by the end of 2024.
The locations were selected based on fatal and serious injury collision data from the last seven years and speed data, as well as feedback from stakeholders.
As with GoSafe vans, drivers detected by static speed cameras breaking the speed limit on that road will be automatically issued a fixed charge penalty notice.
The locations for the nine static speed safety cameras are: Galway, N59, between Moycullen and Galway City; Waterford, N25, between Glenmore and Luffany; Wicklow, R772, Arklow Road, Aske, north of Gorey; Donegal, N14, east of Letterkenny; Carlow, N80, between Barristown and Levitstown Dublin, Crumlin Road/Parnell Road/Dolphin Road/Dolphin’s Barn Junction; Mayo, N17, northeast of Claremorris; Cork, N22, east of Lissarda, west of Ovens; Limerick, N69, east of Askeaton.
