Upgrades to Roscommon and Castlerea train stations planned

Iarnród Éireann has submitted planning permission applications to Roscommon County Council for accessibility upgrades at Roscommon and Castlerea Stations.
The applications are part of Iarnród Éireann’s ongoing Accessibility Programme, funded by the Department of Transport through the National Transport Authority.
New footbridges incorporating lifts and stairs are proposed for both stations, with additional works.
These works include the widening of existing platforms to incorporate the new bridge structures, with associated fencing as well as the construction of new waiting shelters.
The application seeks permission to carry out all ancillary works needed including a temporary access path for the construction period from St Theresa’s Road for Roscommon Station, and temporary removal of a wall for construction access off the N60 at Castlerea Station.
It is also proposed to develop a Changing Places toilet at Roscommon Station, separate to the planning application. Changing Places facilities are designed to enhance the health, safety, comfort and dignity of people who may need extra support and additional equipment during personal care tasks. Changing Places facilities also offer added safety and support features for assistants.

These planning applications are an important milestone, and we look forward to progressing works at Roscommon and Castlerea, subject to planning and funding approvals.”
