The Boyle Golf Club’s first ever duck race fundraiser was a huge success.
Taking place at the weekend on the Boyle River, almost 1,000 ducks took part in the race, which started from the main bridge with the finish line near the Pleasure Grounds.
The proceeds of the fundraiser will go towards making the game of golf more accessible to all in the community, including children and people with disabilities.
The club thanked everyone involved, especially the 'Duck Race Supremo' herself, Susan O'Mahoney, who came up with the concept originally and saw it through to its successful conclusion.
“Susan had a capable committee with her, including Paddy McLoughlin, Karl Keenan, Michelle Quinn, Regina McLoughlin, and Paul Brown,” the club said. “We were especially grateful for the help received on the day from many people who are not members of the golf club, but many of whom are active members and volunteers in other clubs within the town.” The winner of the race’s 1st prize was Leanne Connolly, “someone who has put in great work with Boyle Celtic in recent years,” the club said. Second prize went to Josie Reid; third prize Michael O'Dowd; fourth Ronan Nerney; and fifth Gerard Mullaney.
“Thanks to all who bought ducks and to Cecil Tivnan for his sponsorship of a spot prize,” the club said.

Roscommon Gardaí Community Policing Unit said they had great ‘quack’ providing assistance at the race.
“There was a great atmosphere with a DJ & face painting keeping everyone entertained,” they said. "Well done to the organisers and marshals on a great event and thank you to the motorists for your patience and support in keeping people safe.”
