Preparations are well underway in Boyle, which will host the finish of the opening stage in this year’s Rás Tailteann on Wednesday, May 21st.
The 155.5 kilometres stage from Drogheda to Boyle will resurrect memories from 1988 when the iconic Nissan Classic came to the North Roscommon town, which allowed sports enthusiasts see famous Irish cyclists Seán Kelly and Stephen Roche race around the Curlieu Mountains and streets of the town.
This year, local hero Daire Feeley, who won the Rás in 2022, will be very much the centre of attention as big-time cycling returns to the North Roscommon Town.
“This is a massive event for Boyle, and we’re thrilled that the opening stage of this year’s Rás is finishing here. The town has a rich history with the sport, and this latest chapter is a reminder of how popular cycling is here in the local area,” said Carmel Regan, a member of the Stage End Co-ordination team and a member of the local Curlieu Wheelers Cycling Club.
The Stage End Co-ordination team also includes An Garda Siochana, Roscommon County Council, Curlieu Wheelers Cycling Club, and Noel Feeley, CEO of Roscommon Sports Partnership.
The Rás last came to Boyle in 1994, while the town also hosted a stage finish in 1977.
“Everyone remembers when the Nissan Classic came to Boyle in the late eighties, and the buzz it brought to the area. It showcased the beauty of where we live, and we’re hoping to replicate that feel-good factor as another major cycle race comes to the town. We want everyone to get involved around the town and give the Rás Tailteann a welcome to remember,” continued Carmel.
There will be parking and traffic restrictions around the town on Wednesday, May 21st, while the stage finish at the Craoibhin Bar and Restaurant on Elphin Street is set to feature on RTÉ News later that evening.
