In the budget for 2026, the funding for the operation of the county’s library and archival service is €2.8 million, inclusive of support service costs. This funds the branch library network, the mobile library service, the county library and archive and its online services.
“Specific measures in 2026 include the promotion of the My Open Library Service in the newly refurbished Ballaghaderreen library in the historic Dillon House, the delivery of improved access to the local studies and archives service, and the upgrading of the mobile library vehicle,” the council said.
In terms of capital expenditure, the budget has allocated €6.5 million for the new public library in Boyle. The construction works for the project were tendered in 2025, and a contractor was appointed in August. The expected duration of the works is 18 months.
Speaking at the recent budget meeting, Cllr Valerie Byrne highlighted the importance of library services.
The independent councillor added that Elphin had its own library and “it was taken away and went to a mobile library”.
“We are glad to have that but I do think it is high time that Elphin was given a permanent library,” she said. “You have spoken about how important libraries are, so I do think it should be reinstated.”
