Despite the heartbreak of almost ten years, Lough Funshinagh remains one of the most beautiful places in the county.

It is a also a place of rich and almost fantastical history. A lake that disappears, leaving a bounty of fish, it is a story that is close to Biblical. It is a reminder of the hidden channels and ways that crisscross underneath our feet, and that the world continues to contain wonders.

In its recent history, the lake has seen significant reductions, including in 1955, 1984 and in 1996, when it in effect emptied completely. But these are far from the only occasions, as respected Irish academic JC Coleman noted in 1965.

“In November 1955, the tenth time in the last fifty years, the waters of the lake vanished down a swallow hole, leaving hundreds of fish stranded on its muddy bottom. In July 1964 I visited the site and grass was growing over most of the lake bed.” In 1984 the lake vanished for six months, the Geological Survey of Ireland November 1996 newsletter noted, and in late August of 1996 the lake again completely emptied, refilling only with the heavy rains of mid and late October.

For those who witnessed these spectacular events, it was something they would never forget – the day a lake vanished.

The Herald was delighted to receive a black and white photo from one of our readers of five men holding up quite a catch of fish. It is believed that the photo may have been taken in the 1950s or 1960s. Hopefully someone will be able to help identify these men and the year the picture was taken. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Roscommon Herald by post, or emailing editor@roscommonherald.com, or through or social media channels.

It is also hoped that a permanent solution to the heartbreaking flooding at the lake is in sight, and it can once again be known as a place of wonder and beauty.
