Contractor sought for major upgrade works at council HQ
Áras an Chontae, Roscommon Town.
Planned major refurbishment works at the council’s headquarters are estimated to cost €1.2 million.
According to tender documents uploaded on the state’s tendering website, etender.ie, the local authority is seeking a contractor to carry out architectural alterations and upgrades to Aras an Chontae in order to “optimise the energy and ergonomic efficiency of the building”.
The tender was published on November 28th and the deadline for submissions is January 14th. Earlier this year, the council sought a contractor for LED lighting upgrades at Roscommon County Council's headquarters with an estimated cost of €500,000.
When contacted the council said the Áras an Chontae building was designed and built prior to the introduction of the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Act 2021, its subsequent amendments and the National Climate Action Plan.
“These instruments, among others such as the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) and the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) have resulted in an increasingly stringent legislative environment which could not have been envisaged at the time the building was designed (circa 2012),” a spokesperson said.
“Furthermore, the social and economic environment in which Roscommon County Council operate in has also changed in a manner that could not have been foreseen in 2012. To accommodate our new priorities, some ergonomic changes to the building are necessary.”
The award winning Áras an Chontae building was officially opened in 2016 by former minister and TD, Denis Naughten. Councillors were informed in 2017 that the approximate cost of the building was €22 million.
