Council plans five new social homes in County Roscommon town

Roscommon County Council has unveiled proposals to deliver five new social housing units in Castlerea town through the redevelopment of a property on St. Patrick’s Street.

The council is planning to renovate and repurpose an existing dwelling and commercial building, together with the construction of additional homes to the rear of the site.

Under the plans, the existing building would be converted to provide two two-bedroom residential units, while three one-bedroom units would be built on lands behind the property.

The local authority has outlined that an appropriate assessment screening report and an environmental impact assessment screening report have been completed for the project.

The reports concluded that the proposed development would not require a full Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR) and would not need to proceed to Stage 2 Appropriate Assessment.

Members of the public who believe the development could have significant environmental effects may apply to An Coimisiún Pleanála for a screening determination within four weeks of the publication of the notice.

Plans and particulars of the proposals are available for inspection at the Housing Department, Áras an Chontae, Roscommon, and can also be viewed online through the local authority planning portal.

The council is inviting submissions and observations on the proposed development.

Comments can be made online or in writing and must be received by 4 p.m. on October 29th, 2026.
