The first ever modular social home will be installed by Roscommon County Council within the next three months, it has emerged.

At a special meeting of Athlone Municipal District held recently, councillors approved the installation of a one-bedroom single storey modular dwelling at Ballina, Dysart in South Roscommon.

Councillors were informed at the meeting that no objections or third party submissions were received during the Part 8 process.

Prepared by the council’s housing section, the proposed development will be situated on .276 acres and is funded by the Department of Housing under the Social Housing programme.

The Municipal District meeting was told that there are other buildings in disrepair within the land holding but it will not involve demolishing them. An existing mobile home on site will be removed before the modular unit is installed.

A spokesperson for Roscommon County Council confirmed that this modular dwelling is the first to be introduced into the county by the local authority.

When asked if the council intend rolling out more modular units this year and in the coming years, the spokesperson said that the Roscommon Housing Department “will consider modern methods of construction including modular units that meet building control regulations if they are deemed suitable for a project”.

It is expected that the modular unit in Dysart will be installed over the next two to three months.

The spokesperson outlined that the Housing Department is in the “final stage of the unit procurement” from a supplier.

It’s understood that the modular dwelling will be provided to a person on the council’s housing waiting list.
