A County Roscommon farmer has been named an FBD National Hall of Fame award winner for his long years of service to and support of the Irish Angus Cattle Society.
Joe McCormack from Steil, Tulsk can trace back his association to the breed through his late father, Michael T. McCormack, who founded the Steil Angus herd in 1955 —70 years ago this year.
At the time, the family farm in Steil, Tulsk housed three bulls, an Angus, a Shorthorn and a Hereford. These bulls were made available to neighbouring farmers, who would walk their cows to Steil for service. Legend has it that some cows knew their way to the bull in Steil without any guidance from their owners.
Over the years, Joe has bred pedigree Shorthorn, Hereford and Angus cattle but his true passion has always been with the Angus breed.
Joe and his father were among the founding members of the Irish Angus Cattle Society in 1967. The Steil herd has also enjoyed considerable success in the show ring, securing numerous Angus Championships in Carrick-on-Shannon, along with All-Ireland Aldi Bull Calf, Irish Angus and Irish Angus Elite Sale Championships.
Joe has also bred several renowned AI bulls, including Steil Knockranny, Steil Hero, Steil Picasso, Steil Kenneth and Steil Useful. His bulls have also found homes in some of the most prestigious herds in the UK and even South Africa.
