It was another fantastic day of sport and achievement for the county’s athletes on Sunday last.

Approximately 450 children and teenagers took part in the 2026 Longford, Roscommon & Westmeath Outdoor Track & Field Championships. At a somewhat overcast day at the outdoor track in TUS Athlone, they made their families, clubs and county proud.

There was a bumper turnout from Castlerea Crusaders, which attended with a strong coaching team. The club was brilliantly supported, as always, by parents who helped out both at the events and behind the scenes.

“Our U8–U11 athletes kicked things off with sprints, distance races, javelin, and long jump,” the club said. “While there were plenty of medals won, the real highlight was the energy, teamwork, and encouragement, as the kids cheered each other on throughout the morning.

“The afternoon session saw our U12–U17 athletes continue that fantastic spirit. With hurdles, shot put, and high jump added to the schedule, there were some incredible performances across sprinting, jumping, and throwing. Many of our athletes have now qualified for the Connacht finals—an amazing achievement.”

Roscommon AC said it was a super day for all the athletes involved.

“The event served as a platform for our athletes taking part in Connacht Children’s Games on June 6th in Galway and Connacht Juveniles on June 13th in Sligo,” it said.

“This was a great opportunity for our younger athletes to dip their toes into competing on the outdoor track, and stand beside athletes and friends from their own county alongside those from neighbouring counties.”

Reeside AC saw around 40 of its athletes take part in various events on the day. The club thanked the coaches, parents, organisers and volunteers for helping to make a fantastic day of sport. Suck Valley AC also took part to great success.

Well done to everyone involved!

Attendees also had the opportunity to support the development of the county’s proposed new 400 metres, eight-lane track in Roscommon Town by entering the Win a Garden Room and Kitchen draw , which will take place this Monday.
