Department confirms County Roscommon apartments earmarked for International Protection Applicants

Activity has been observed outside the Castlerea apartment in recent weeks.

The Department of Integration has today confirmed that part of an apartment complex in Castlerea is being earmarked for International Protection Applicants (IPAs), who are seeking asylum in Ireland.

In response to a query from Roscommon-Galway Sinn Féin
TD Claire Kerrane, the Department of Integration confirmed to the Deputy that International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) has been “engaging with the provider of this property and discussions are at an advanced stage”.

The Department response also said it was anticipated that the property could be brought into use in the near future to provide accommodation to IP applicants.

“No IPAs have been moved into the property. In advance of this property coming into use, the Community Engagement Team will provide a detailed briefing note to all local public representatives,” the response noted.

Growing concerns have been raised in recent weeks by local people and public representatives about the lack of clarity around the future use of a section of the apartment complex in the town.

It emerged earlier today that a peaceful protest march organised by local people will take place on Sunday next in the town to allow the community voice its concerns about the issue.

The demonstration commences from the Lidl Store at 1 p.m. on the Knock Road and will move up through the town centre.
