Free chainsaw training courses now open 

FRS Training is encouraging farmers and those involved in farming to take advantage of a series of fully funded chainsaw training courses.

The two-day chainsaw operations training courses (QQI Level 5) are fully funded by the Department of Agriculture. Two courses will take place in Carrick-on-Shannon on September 17th and 21st.

Chainsaws are among the most hazardous pieces of equipment used on farms and can cause life-changing injuries or fatalities when used incorrectly. Common accidents include severe lacerations, kickback injuries, cuts to the legs and feet, and injuries resulting from poor maintenance, inadequate PPE, or a lack of training.

Proper instruction in safe operating techniques, equipment maintenance, risk assessment and the correct use of protective equipment is essential to reduce these risks and ensure chainsaws are used safely and effectively.

Each two-day course is designed for anyone aged 16 years or older who is actively involved in farming and wishes to develop the knowledge and practical skills required to safely maintain and operate a chainsaw.

Participants will learn essential skills including:

• Safe chainsaw maintenance and inspection • Chain sharpening and routine servicing • Safe operating techniques • Risk assessment and hazard awareness • Personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements • Practical chainsaw operation techniques As the course includes practical outdoor activities, learners must bring the appropriate chainsaw PPE, including:

• Chainsaw protective trousers • Chainsaw protective boots • Chainsaw protective jacket • Safety helmet with visor and ear protection • Protective gloves Ben Fearn, head of sales and operations at FRS Training, said:
