A Garda who was killed while carrying out a checkpoint in north Dublin this afternoon Sunday has been named as Garda Kevin Flatley,  whose father is originally from Clooncrim, Ballinlough in West Roscommon.

Garda Flatley was hit by a motorcycle near Lanestown just before 1 p.m.. The motorcyclist is in a serious condition following the collision.

The Garda (49), a member of the Roads Policing Unit, was conducting a speed checkpoint in the area when the incident occurred.

He suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

The motorcyclist, a man aged in his 30s, was transported by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said his thoughts, and the thoughts of all personnel in An Garda Síochána, were with Kevin’s family and friends.

President Michael D Higgins offered his “deepest condolences” to the family, colleagues and friends of Garda Flatley, who he said had “dedicated his career” to keeping people safe.

Garda Flatley, the father of two young children, was a well-respected member of the force with 26 years of experience.

He is the 90th member of the Garda to be killed in the line of duty since the force’s foundation more than a century ago.

“Kevin was on duty this afternoon, serving the public by endeavouring in keeping them safe on our roads,” Mr Harris said.

“His death is a terrible reminder of the dangers faced by gardaí. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.”

Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan said Garda Flatley "died in the line of duty, serving and protecting the community. I know his death will bring heartbreak to his family, friends, loved ones and his colleagues in An Garda Síochána across the whole country."
