Goalkeeper who survived cancer twice speaks to Roscommon students

Former Leitrim goalkeeper, Martin McHugh, was diagnosed with cancer on two different occasions.

A former Leitrim goalkeeper, who beat cancer twice, spoke to County Roscommon Transition Year students earlier this week about the importance of regular health checks.

Martin McHugh, who was part of the Leitrim team that won the Connacht SFC title in 1994 — the county’s first in 67 years — met with TY students from Roscommon CBS to share his remarkable story.

In 2009, Martin was diagnosed with testicular cancer. In 2015, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Today, he remains the only member of the ’94 panel that still plays competitive football, lining out with his local club Aughnasheelin.

Martin highlighted the importance of having regular health checks and being aware of the signs to look out for. He also spoke about his journey through recovery, how his diagnosis led him to his current career as a Health Care Assistant in Sligo University Hospital and how he is still playing football today.

Roscommon CBS thanked Martin for taking the time to visit the students and providing such an inspirational talk.
