Gorse fire brought under control at Roosky

The fire broke out in the Drumard area.

A gorse fire which broke out around the Roosky area yesterday afternoon was brought under control within a number of hours.

The fire broke out in the Drumard area on the Leitrim/Roscommon border and spread across the roadway resulting in the closure of one small road on Monday.

A spokesperson for Leitrim County Council stated: “Leitrim County Council Fire service crews from Mohill, with support from the Carrick-on-Shannon fire station attended a gorse fire in Roosky yesterday evening. The Fire Service got the gorse fire under control shortly after their arrival and by last night had extinguished the fire.”

Windy conditions somewhat hampered the efforts of firefighters who have also been complimented for all their work in tackling the blaze.

Local Councillor Sean McGowan said: “I want to compliment the fire staff on the work they carried out for a number of hours. I appeal to people just to be careful if they're smoking and to be sure that they put out their cigarettes and in a proper way. I also want to appeal to people to not be dumping,” adding that land and vegetation is so dry at the moment that any bit of glass or plastic could be a conductor for a blaze.
