Plans for a new community amenity area with a playground in Croghan village have been given the go-ahead by Roscommon County Council.

Croghan Community Projects Group has been granted planning permission for the development, aimed at providing a community area for all ages and ability.

The group was formed in 2021 with the aim of establishing a playground in Croghan.

The group noted that there was no communal outdoor playground in the village, with the nearest such facility located five miles away.

“It makes sense, we feel, from an environmental point of view to have a safe, outdoor space in our village that we can reach by foot/bicycle rather than having to travel by car to our nearest town five miles away,” the group said in its application.

The planning documents outlined that Croghan has experienced the development of two housing estates, “so we now have 40 additional houses in the village — excluding any individual dwellings on private lands in the local area”.

“From an interactive point of view, our application for our amenity area isn’t just for children. It’s a space also where parents/grandparents get a chance to connect with others,” the group added.

“We will continue to do our utmost to make living in North West Ireland a choice rather than a compromise.”

The local GAA club, Shannon Gaels, has given consent for the development of the facility on lands owned by the club.
