Herald Deputy Editor Richard Canny has been recognised for excellence in legal journalism at this year's Justice Media Awards held at the Law Society of Ireland in Dublin on Thursday.

Richard received a Certificate of Merit in the Print/Online Journalism (Local) category for his story: 'The Probation Service: managing the delicate balance between rehabilitation and risk'.

In adjudicating his work, the judges said: "By showcasing the importance and impact of the probation service at a local level, and by providing an easy explainer of term definitions, this journalist’s reporting stood out for being sympathetic, informative and educational for members of the public.

His colleague Claire McGovern was also shortlisted in the same category for 'Elphin family faces fifth Christmas without dad Robert who remains a ‘hostage’'.

The awards, organised by the Law Society of Ireland, recognise journalism that enhances public understanding of the justice system, legal processes and related issues.
