Job losses feared as Roscommon betting shops under closure threat

Ladbrokes has decided to close 39 of its 100 betting shops in Ireland.

A number of jobs are under threat in County Roscommon following Ladbrokes decision to close 39 of its 100 betting shops in Ireland.

The UK firm has a number of shops operating in the county, including in Castlerea and Ballaghaderreen.

It’s understood that the betting group has started the process of informing staff of its proposal. A total of 226 jobs nationally are understood to be at risk with the closures expected to take place by the end of May.

It's understood that that the planned closures are due to sustained cost pressures, changes in customer behaviour and the growing competitive threat from the unlicensed market.

The shops to be closed are not being shared at the moment, as consultation is ongoing until early May.

The company said it is continually reviewing its retail estate to ensure our business remains competitive and financially sustainable.

"These planned closures in the Republic of Ireland are not a decision we take lightly and reflect sustained cost pressures, long term changes in customer behaviour and the growing competitive threat from the unlicensed market.

“Our priority now is to engage constructively with colleagues throughout the consultation process, with a strong focus on redeployment wherever possible. Ladbrokes remains committed to Ireland and to operating responsibly within a sustainable retail footprint.”
