A former convent in Lanesboro damaged by fire yesterday evening (Tuesday) was due to accommodate Ukrainian refugees, a local Fine Gael councillor has confirmed.

Fine Gael Councillor Colm Murray, Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council, confirmed to RTÉ News that there was as yet no start date for people to move into the building but that work had begun.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the fire, which was quickly brought under control by fire services. It’s understood that the building sustained minor damage and no injuries were reported.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed to the Roscommon Herald that a technical examination of the scene will take place.

Cllr Murray also told RTÉ News that a meeting had taken place yesterday with local representatives, local council staff, and the owner of the premises.
