A large solar farm development on a 93 acre site in North Roscommon has been given the go-ahead by Roscommon County Council.

Elgin Energy Services Limited, an Irish solar energy company based in Dublin, has been granted planning permission for the development at Meera and Tullyleague, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Roscommon.

The solar farm will include photovoltaic panels on ground mounted frames in rows; a 38kV ESB electricity substation; up to 23 single inverter stations; ducting and underground electrical cabling; pole mounted CCTV cameras; perimeter fencing, storage containers and the provision of some new internal access tracks along with the use of some existing agricultural tracks.

The plans also include vehicular access via existing private roads that connect directly to the L50783, construction of two passing bays along the L50783 and all associated site development and landscaping works.

Planning has been granted for a duration of 10 years and the solar farm will have an operational lifespan of 40 years, with an estimated export capacity of approximately 30MW  of electricity.

The farm will connect into the ESB Network via the existing 110kV Carrick-on-Shannon substation situated near Carrick-on-Shannon railway station.

The project has been given the green light, subject to 31 conditions, which include stipulations on permitted noise levels and a glint and glare assessment to be carried out on an annual basis for a minimum of five years.

The developer must also pay a development contribution of €180,000 to the council before works commence.
