Last remaining travel agency in county to close at end of year as owners opt to retire

The owners of Gannon Travel in Castlerea have announced that they will be retiring at the end of the year. The news means that the last remaining travel agency in the county will shut in December.

Francis and Miriam Gannon told the Roscommon Herald: “Our retirement will see the closure of the travel agency, after 31 years of service to the people of Castlerea and beyond.

“Although not retiring until December 2025, we are announcing the closure in advance to allow for an orderly wind up of the business and to facilitate customers with existing bookings and vouchers. Bookings with existing customers will continue without interruption.

“We will be taking bookings for travel up to the end of October 2025. All outstanding travel vouchers will be honoured up to October 31st, 2025 with the following options: To book with Gannon Travel for travel up to October 31st, 2025 or receive a refund on the value of the voucher.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers and suppliers who have supported us down through the years.” The Castlerea natives said after three decades they felt that it was the right time to make this decision and “take a bit of time for ourselves. It is time to take a step back and breathe the air.” The travel agency has been in place since the early 1900s and over the years generations of families have availed of their services.

Miriam said it has been a pleasure to meet and deal with members of the public over the last 31 years and thanked everyone for the kindness shown to them.

The business, which will be a huge loss not just for the town but also the county, is well-known for its personal service which it offers before, during and after the period of vacation ensuring that customers know that Gannon Travel “is always there for them”, an ethos they intend to continue until the final day of business.
