Local Notes: Ladies lead by example, Irish language classes and underage success

FUNDRAISER THANKS 

The parishioners of Ballinagare, Frenchpark, Fairymount and Tibohine wish to thank most sincerely the Roscommon Men's Choir for their lively energetic performance, in aid of all four local churches, on Friday, September 19th last at the Sacred Heart Church in Ballinagare DANCE CLASSES Adult ceilí dance classes will commence in Tibohine Community Centre on this Thursday, October 2nd from 10.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. for five weeks. This is a social class for fun and fitness, and no experience is required. Contact Ethna Fahy to book on 087-6661905.

LATE MR JOHN McDERMOTT 

The peaceful death occurred of Mr John McDermott, Newmarket-on-Fergus, County Clare and Cloontarsna, Castlerea on Sunday, September 21st last in Milford Care Centre. Brother of Bernie Ward, Lissananny, he was predeceased by his parents, Michael-John and Mary in 2023. John will be sadly missed by his heartbroken family, wife, Mary; daughters Aisling and Clair; son, Shane; son-in-law, Jason; grandson, baby Joe; brothers and sisters, Paddy, Bernie, Kathleen, Ann, Mary, Michael and Kieran; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended family, neighbours and many friends. Following Requiem Mass in St. Conaire’s Church, Carrigerry, Stonehall on Wednesday, September 24th last, cremation took place in Shannon Crematorium.

Pray for the repose of the souls of Mrs Patricia Groarke, Drumlish, County Longford and formerly of Ballaghaderreen and Ballinameen; David Gillespie, Knockvicar, Boyle; Mr Paolo Roberto, Castlecoote and Mrs Sheila Callaghan, Ballintubber, Castlerea. May they rest in peace.

CHURCH NEWS 

Masses will be held in Frenchpark at 7 p.m. on Thursday (2nd), in Ballinagare at 7 p.m. on Friday (3rd), Tibohine at 7 p.m. and Ballinagare at 8.30 p.m. on Saturday (4th) and in Frenchpark at 10 a.m. and Fairymount at 11.30 a.m. on Sunday (5th). Visits to the sick and housebound will take place on Thursday (2nd) and Friday, October 3rd at the usual times.

IRISH LANGUAGE CLASSES 

Irish language classes for adults will take place in Cruachan Ai (F45HH51) Tulsk on Wednesday, October 8th from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m.. This course is suitable for all levels with an emphasis on conversational Irish. Beginners are welcome. It will run every Wednesday for five weeks and there is a nominal fee of €50. This course is being supported by Roscommon County Council and Boyle Municipal District. For further information contact Deirdre at 087-3807773 (evenings).

LOTTO  

Western Gaels held its weekly lottery draw on Saturday, September 27th last. There was no jackpot winner. The numbers drawn were 4, 10, 21 and 29. Cash prize winners (€20 each) were Breege/Adrian Beirne, Deirdre McDermott, Donna McDermott, Kevin Taylor and Christine Whitehouse. The next draw (jackpot €4,700) will take place at the clubhouse in Frenchpark on this Saturday, October 4th. Tickets are available on-line through the Clubforce app or from local outlets. Best wishes to the Gaels men’s junior team who play St. Croan’s in the county championship semi-final on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Castlerea.

LINE DANCING 

Line dancing classes with Mildred Beirne continues in Frenchpark Hall on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. for beginners and 8 p.m. for advanced.

CHAIR YOGA

LADIES LEAD BY EXAMPLE 

The Tulsk St. Mary’s ladies footballers continued their impressive march in the Junior ‘A’ championship at the weekend when defeating a Kilmore/Kilglass selection in their last four encounter. The team produced an amazing performance securing for themselves a place in this year’s Junior Final against near neighbours Northern Harps. It will be something of a revenge mission for the team have been defeated by Harps in the earlier league phase of the competition. Please check this week’s fixtures for confirmation of the final and team. The club would like to thank everyone that came out and got behind the team which was greatly appreciated. Meanwhile, the club’s U-10’s participated in a recent county blitz and acquitted themselves well. The team were sponsored by Kingsize.ie - Kingsize Big & Tall Menswear.

CHAMPIONSHIP REVERSAL 

Commiserations to Tulsk’s junior team who suffered an agonising one-point loss to Kilmore in their Junior ‘B’ championship semi-final against Kilmore at the weekend. The final score was Kilmore 3-12 to Tulsk’s 2-14. Despite the loss the entire squad and their members are to be commended on a fine campaign and acknowledged for their hard work and effort throughout their campaign.

UNDERAGE SUCCESS 

The McGarry Group sponsored Tulsk U-14 boys put in a fantastic performance last weekend in their Division 3 County Championship semi-final against a strong Western Gaels B team to qualify for a county final. At half-time, Tulsk led 2-4 to Western Gaels 1-1. In the second half, the Tulsk half-back line proved their mettle and put Western Gaels under considerable pressure. But overall, this was a fantastic performance from a great team. The side move on to a championship county final, which is yet to be finalised. Kilmurry Hall monthly dance will take place on Sunday, October 5th. Music by Carmel McLoughlin with dancing from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., admission €10. All welcome to come alone for another great night of dancing.

Castleplunkett NS is holding a 'Cash for Clobber' collection in early October. Bags with old clothes, shoes, handbags, curtains, household items and fabrics (no duvets or pillows thank you) can be dropped to the school between Monday, October 6th and Wednesday, October 8th.
