Local projects to feature in BT Young Scientist Exhibition
A total of 550 projects and hundreds of students will represent their school and community at the 2024 BTYSTE this week.
A range of projects from local schools have qualified for the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition 2024, which takes place between Wednesday and Friday, January 10th-13th.
The schools include CBS Roscommon, Coláiste Chiaráin, Roscommon Community College, Scoil Mhuire, Strokestown and Glenamaddy Community School.
In the group section CBS Roscommon submitted a project ‘An investigation into the medicinal qualities of Myrica gale commonly known as bog myrtle’ in the Biological & Ecological category.
Coláiste Chiaráin has four projects in both individual and group. Digital Duality: Is AI a Blessing or a Plague?’ and ‘Are You a Sheep or a Lone Wolf?’ have both qualified in the Social & Behavioural Sciences category. ‘Can we produce a safer child seat using off the shelf technology?’ and ‘Fabulous Fodder – The answer is in the ground’ have both been selected in the Technology category.
Roscommon Community College has six entrants : ‘Rooting for Sustainability: An Exploration of More Sustainable Grassland Nutrient Management for a Greener Future’; ‘Tagged walls and teenage tales: Unveiling the secrets behind graffiti in Secondary school bathrooms’; ‘An Investigation into Contemporary Propaganda and a Retrospective on the Evolution of Widespread Misinformation Campaigns’; and ‘Exploring Adolescent Digital Entrepreneurship: A Study Of Participation On Trading Apps ‘are the four submitted under Social and Behavioural Sciences.
Meanwhile there are two under Chemical, Physical & Mathematical Sciences : ‘Radon Revelations’ and ‘The Impact of Peer-Led Cyberbullying Prevention Workshops’.
Scoil Mhuire, Strokestown has two projects which qualified: ‘A statistical study of the perceived stress levels of First Year post primary students during their transition to post primary school’ in the Individual Social & Behavioural Sciences category. The second is :’ Triple S(Slurry Safety System’) in the Technology group category.
A total of 550 projects and hundreds of students will represent their school and community at the 2024 BTYSTE this week. The event attracts some 40,000 people making it one of the largest events of its kind in Europe.
Of all the submissions for the 2024 exhibition, the most common project titles are focused on health (16%); mental, menstrual, sleep, medicine, ageing, behaviour. Mental health project entries covered a broad range of topics, such as beauty standards, sports performance, exercise, and sleep.
