Local pubs revealed as finalists in Square Bar of the Year Awards

A number of local pubs have been selected as finalists in the prestigious Square Bar of the Year Awards.

The awards celebrate excellence across Ireland's licensed trade, recognising outstanding bars, bartenders, hotel venues, hospitality teams and pub groups across more than 30 award categories. From traditional pubs and neighbourhood locals to internationally recognised five-star hotel bars, innovative cocktail venues and thriving gastropubs, this year's finalists showcase the very best of Irish hospitality.

With over 1000 entries, this year’s The Square Bar of the Year Awards has attracted more submissions than ever before, making the judges’ task incredibly challenging as the competition reached new heights. After thorough and intense deliberations, only the finest bars have earned their place as finalists. Following months of meticulous evaluation and an exhaustive search for the most outstanding venues, the finalists have been announced.

McHugh’s Bar in Carrick-on-Shannon has been shortlisted in three categories: Best Bar to Watch the Match; Best Live Entertainment, and Outside Space of the Year. An Poitin Stil in Carrick-on-Shannon has also made the finalists’ list in the Outside Space of the Year category.

Meanwhile MJ O’Connor in Leitrim Village has also been revealed as a finalist in three categories: Gastro Pub of the Year; Local Bar of the Year and Staff Personality of the Year.

Gertie Browne's Bar and Bistro in Athlone has been shortlisted for Best Designed Bar / Inside Space; Gastro Bar of the Year; Tourist Bar of the Year and, Traditional Bar of the Year.

All finalists will be considered for the 2026 People's Choice Award, voted by the public.

This year’s winners will be announced on Monday, 24th August 2026, at a gala event at the prestigious Clayton Hotel on Burlington Road.
