Local woman elected as SIPTU Honorary Vice President

New SIPTU Honorary Vice President, Annette Donlon

A local woman said she is delighted to have been elected as SIPTU’s new Honorary Vice President.

Annette Donlon, who is originally from Athlone but now living in Creggs, County Galway, was elected at the union’s conference last week.

She has been a SIPTU member for over 30 years, with more than 25 years experience representing workers as a shop steward.

Her achievement was praised by South Roscommon councillors yesterday at their meeting.

“It’s a two year role and I had an overwhelming majority of the delegates,” she said. “I have been up and down the country, meeting members and fighting different campaigns such as the ‘Big Start Campaign’ for early years educators and the ‘Raise the Roof Campaign’ for housing.” Ensuring that workers are protected at work and receive a living wage are also a major priority for her.

“The cost of living is going up every day and we are not allowing for it,” Ms Donlon, who is a well known Roscommon County Council worker, said. She also voiced her support for the aims of the union's new Honorary President, Alan Lindley.

A long standing union member, she thanked everyone, including her husband John, for their support and said she is looking forward to her term as honorary vice president of Ireland's largest trade union.
