Lough Funshinagh to exceed highest recorded water levels

Rising water levels at Lough Funshinagh have forced Roscommon County Council to close a load road while it carries out works.
The water levels at Lough Funshinagh are expected to reach their highest recorded levels ever in the coming weeks.
Geological Survey Ireland has been monitoring the lake since August of 2016 and its monitoring shows the lake has risen sharply since late September.
As of yesterday, Sunday March 3rd, the lake was at the same level it was in April 2021, 69.02 metres, its highest level ever recorded.
Rahara man, Cllr Laurence Fallon said it was a very worrying time for the communities living around the South Roscommon lake.
“Sunday afternoon all looks peaceful at Lough Funshinagh but in reality the residents are living one day at a time in constant fear of being flooded out of their homes,” he said on social media.
He added that as further rain was expected “and 6 weeks of normal winter weather still to come we are now in unknown territory”.
“We must continue to live in hope and work to hold back the rising water for the next few months,” he said.
Due to the rising water, Roscommon County Council took the decision to close the local road L-2005 at Ballagh effective from Monday, February 19th.
“This closure is necessary to facilitate the deployment of additional temporary flood protection measures along this road, aimed at safeguarding adjacent properties from rising water levels at Lough Funshinagh,” the council said.
