'Massive win' for Roscomm on village as future of postal services secured

The future of postal services in Knockcroghery has now been secured after a local business announced that it would be providing them.

The current post office in Knockcroghery was scheduled to close its doors shortly, as the postmistress is retiring after decades of service to the local community.

Earlier this year, a spokesperson for An Post said it was working hard to find a suitable contractor to provide post office services to the people of the village and the surrounding areas.

Yesterday, Daybreak Knockcroghery announced that it was absolutely delighted that full post office services are being installed in the premises in the coming months.

“A local post office is the absolute heartbeat of a community like ours—it is so much more than just a place to post a letter or collect a pension, it’s a vital daily hub for catching up and supporting one another,” the business said, adding that it “was a massive win for everyone”.

It also thanked Independent Ireland TD Michael Fitzmaurice for his help on the matter.

When contacted, An Post confirmed the move.

As reported in the Herald this week by Brian Cunniffe, post office services in the Knockcroghery catchment area will continue to be provided by Ms Mary Fitzgerald Dolan beyond the previously stated July 10th deadline. Ms Fitzgerald Dolan had been due to retire after serving as postmistress since 1986.

However, An Post plans to continue services at the Daybreak shop, which has not yet been refurbished to accommodate the service. As a result, Ms Fitzgerald Dolan has postponed her retirement until the new facility is operational.
