Minister to turn sod on new €35m 50-bed unit at Sacred Heart Hospital

The Minister for Mental Health and Older People Mary Butler TD, will visit Roscommon tomorrow, Thursday, June 13th to turn the sod on a new 50-bed replacement unit at the Sacred Heart Hospital.

Planning Permission for the proposed development was granted in 2023 and since then a tender process for the works has been undertaken.

“I am delighted that Minister Butler is now in a position to formally announce the commencement of the project which will involve the provision of a new 50-bed unit at a cost of approximately €35m,” said Senator Eugene Murphy.

Speaking in advance of her visit, Minister Butler said: “Delivering healthcare for everyone is a cornerstone of Fianna Fail's approach in government and this Government remains committed to developing all aspects of services for older people.

“Significant progress has been achieved to ensure our health and social care services are treating more patients than ever before. The considerable public investment, including in our community and primary services, means that more people are being treated at home and in the community while this is appropriate to their needs.

“The fact that we are living longer than ever is a really good reflection of our health services, but as we live longer we will require more healthcare and so we must plan for that. Giving individuals, along with their carers and families, the choice to be cared for in their community is a priority in our healthcare planning,” concluded Minister Butler.

Senator Murphy noted that the project at the Sacred Heart would involve a multi-phased delivery to minimise disruption to current operations and occupancy numbers.
