The need for more speed cameras has been highlighted by a local councillor.

The need for more speed cameras has been highlighted by a local councillor after it was revealed that 900 drivers were caught speeding on Irish roads on National Slow Down Day recently.

Speaking to the Roscommon Herald about what he called the “worrying statistics”, the Boyle/Strokestown Municipal District based Independent representative said it was “abundantly clear” that the current number of speed cameras in action was not adequate enough to combat the number of drivers speeding and ultimately the “shocking” number of road deaths.

“With 900 drivers caught speeding on our roads on National Slow Down Day it remains abundantly clear that lack of enforcement has played a part in people’s behaviour.” “It is evident,” continued Cllr Crosby, “that more action is needed and in this case the implementation of more speed cameras, which work by recording your speed at two different points along a particular stretch of road, appears to be the only viable solution.

“Speed on our roads has led to deaths as we have witnessed all too tragically this year already with significant loss of life and although more speed cameras will require serious investment there can be no price on life so I am calling on our government to come together and invest in the distribution of more speed cameras  as a matter of urgency before more lives are lost on our country’s roads,” Cllr Crosby concluded.
