Local towns received an early Christmas present today (Monday) with the announcement of nearly €1 million in funding for a number of projects under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme.

A total of €300,000 has been granted to Elphin for streetscape and painting improvements to include façade and lighting upgrades, enhanced landscaping, improved signage, and the preservation of heritage assets to enrich the town’s village and cultural identity.

A further €300,000 has also been awarded to Roscommon for pedestrian connectivity linking the Town Square to Loughnaneane Park through enhancement works that define the entrance with suitable paving, signage, art installations and soft lighting.

Meanwhile €44,650 has also been awarded under Project Development Measures for the installation of a roof cover over the existing amphitheatre in Loughnaneane Park, enhancing its functionality as a year-round community and cultural space.

€49,999 has been granted for Boyle to carry out a feasibility study on the viability of the courthouse and adjoining space being repurposed as a theatre and community space.

Carrick-on-Shannon is also set to receive €300,000 for the enhancement of the Dock’s public realm with biodiverse, sustainable landscaping, accessible seating for small performances, restored stone steps, and a secure replacement of the side gate.

Senator Gareth Scahill welcomed the funding saying, "This funding is focused on revitalising town centres, tackling vacancy and dereliction, increasing footfall, improving public spaces and supporting local economic growth. It also includes support to help communities plan and develop future project. Nationally, 116 projects have been approved, with €24.4 million going to 77 projects under the main scheme and a further €1.85 million supporting project development. It's especially good news for a Roscommon."
