A new all male choir has been performing in the county over the Christmas period and getting a great response. The choir was established to raise funds for Vita House.
Set up by Roscommon Town man Padraig O'Rourke, the choir recently performed at the Roscommon Christmas Markets, on Sunday, December 10th. It was a tremendous success despite the awful weather.
“It was great, and most importantly we raised money for charity,” said Padraig.
“We only came together for the first time on October 15th. I started the ball rolling on forming the choir in early September and the whole premise of it was to try to raise money for Vita House. I contacted the lads on my phone about the choir and fair play to them, they all bought into it.” There are now close to 40 members, including six musicians, and the choir has a repertoire of carols and contemporary songs.
“The members are predominately from around town, but we also have people from Carrick, Boyle, and Castlerea,” he said. “It is growing and growing. I have always loved music, gone to concerts and matches and listened to people sing. There’s nothing like it. There is something special and powerful about that, singing together.” The choir will be performing again on Saturday, December 23rd at the Harrison Centre at 4.p.m..
“We will be also raising money for Vita House that day,” said Padraig. “We will also be performing on St Stephen’s Day for the Alzheimer’s Society walk and then we’ll take a break, but I know there is an appetite to keep it going.
“Watch this space.”
