A new Hall of Fame award to recognise the outstanding achievements of Castlerea boxing sisters, Aoife and Lisa O’Rourke has been proposed by Roscommon County Council.
Fianna Fáil councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice made the proposal at last week’s meeting of Roscommon County Council.
Noting the sisters' Freedom of Roscommon honour in 2022, Cllr Fitzmaurice suggested that a Hall of Fame award be added to the civic reception format to recognise people’s outstanding achievements in sport and across other areas.
In proposing that the two O’Rourke’s be honoured with Hall of Fame awards, the Castlerea councillor acknowledged their gold-medal winning accomplishments at the recent European Elite Boxing Championships in Bulgaria.
Supporting their colleague on his Hall of Fame proposal, councillors congratulated the two sisters on their achievements to date at both European and world levels, as well as Aoife’s status as a two-time Olympian.
Members praised the two siblings for being fantastic ambassadors for Castlerea, the county and country.
On behalf of council staff and management, CEO Shane Tiernan extended his congratulations to the O’Rourke’s and wished them the very best in their future endeavours.
Council Cathaoirleach, Cllr Domnick Connolly also associated himself with the sentiments.
