New postmaster and location announced for Boyle post office
The post office on Shop Street, Boyle. The post office will be moving to a new location in February.
A new postmaster and location has been announced for Boyle.
A spokesperson for An Post confirmed that Paul Kelly jnr of Kelly’s Supervalu Boyle had accepted the company's offer to run the post office.
The post office will now transfer from its current location on Shop Street to the Supervalu Shopping Centre at Elphin Street in the town.
Mr. Kelly has proposed a vacant retail unit inside Kelly’s Supervalu, located centrally at Elphin Street 450m from the current post office.
The new premises is due to open on February 3rd next.
Late last year, An Post appointed auctioneering firm Cushman Wakefield to handle the sale of 14 town centre post offices including the building in Boyle. The asking price for the property is €130,000.
At the time, An Post said that a condition of the sale of the Boyle building was that the post office would remain in place.
“Yes when we placed the former post office on the market we were doing so on the basis that it would remain as a post office. However, one could never rule out the new contractor giving up their contract, as happened here, not that new applicants would favour a new location," said the An Post spokesperson.
“That’s what happened here and we have been lucky in coming up with an ideal new location and the chance to provide a new modern facility for the people of Boyle.
“As outlined previously we had asked for expression of interest from anyone interested in taking up the partnership opportunity to run the post office in Boyle.
“The application from Paul Kelly provided the opportunity of moving the office to a busy retail location, with good parking and access and providing a modern purpose fitted office for customers,” said the spokesperson.
He added there was always a healthy interest in post office vacancies and "it’s fair to say that the interest in the vacancy in Boyle was strong".
