The new postmaster role at Roscommon Town Post Office has attracted “a number of interested parties”, according to local Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy.
Senator Murphy said that the process of appointing a new postmaster had now closed, and he expected a decision “fairly quickly”.
A spokesperson for An Post said that the company was “going through the expressions of interest”.
The contract offered will be a private one, meaning that for the first time the landmark Post Office on the Square will not be run directly by An Post.
The development follows recent controversy that the historic building could lose its services under a new private contractor model, which could see the services move elsewhere.
A spokesperson for An Post previously said that the company’s preference was that the landmark building, which opened as a post office in 1912, would eventually become a community facility.
