Fr. Tom Cox has been appointed the new parish priest of Kilronan parish as part of diocesan appointments announced today.

Father Cox, previously the administrator in the Parish of Shannonbridge (Clonmacnoise), replaces Fr. Cathal Faughnan who has retired.

Fr. Faughan served in the North Roscommon parish, which takes in Keadue, Arigna and Ballyfarnon, for sixteen years before retiring recently.

In making the announcement, Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnois Paul Connell sincerely thanked Fr. Faughnan for the sterling service he had given to the diocese over the years, and wished him a “long, blessed and fulfilling retirement”.

Fr. Cox’s appointment will take effect from August 24th.

Fr. Faughnan was ordained for the diocese by Bishop Cahal Daly in St. Mel's Cathedral, Longford on June 13 1976. He served as a curate in Ballinahown from 1976 until he was appointed chaplain to the secondary schools in Carrick-on-Shannon in 1977.

He was then appointed as a curate in Longford in 1979 where he served until his departure to the diocesan mission in Chipata, Zambia in 1989.

On his return in 1995, Fr. Faughnan was briefly administrator of Killenummery parish in County Leitrim.

In 1995 he was appointed as priest in charge of Aughavas and Cloone parish, and remained there until his appointment as parish priest of Kilronan in 2008.
