Novel community park to officially open in Elphin

The sensory garden at the Palace NeighbourWood Park incorporates ancient Celtic designs and a stone to commemorate Oisín of Tír na nÓg.

The Elphin Palace NeighbourWood Park and sensory garden will be opened today, Wednesday, August 20th, by Council Cathaoirleach Liam Callaghan, as part of National Heritage Week.

The project, which is across from the windmill, has culminated into a beautiful natural space, with more than 5,000 native Irish trees, ponds and aquatic features – all of which are wheelchair accessible.

The development has taken seven years of planning and hard work by local volunteers and the Elphin Area Community Enterprise (EACA), also known as the Windmill committee,

An ambient natural surrounding under the backdrop of the windmill creates the ideal setting for walks and picnics, which is accommodated by benches, tables and shelter scattered across the park.

The Neighborwood Park will prove to be a great tourist addition to Elphin, along with serving as an educational tool for school tours who will be able to utilise the heritage and natural sciences aspect of the park.

All are welcome to the official opening of the Palace NeighbourWood Park and sensory garden taking place at Windmill Road (F45 E289) this Wednesday at 2 p.m..
