OPW Minister visits county to discuss Lough Funshinagh

Flooding at Lough Funshinagh, South Roscommon
The OPW minister is in the county today to meet with locals and the council about Lough Funshinagh.
The South Roscommon lake, which has flooded roads and threatened homes, is still dangerously high and any reduction in water levels is dependent on rainfall, Cllr Laurence Fallon recently told the Herald.
According to Geological Survey Ireland’s monitoring station at the lake, the water level is starting slowly to fall, although it is still way above previous high water records.
OPW Minister Kieran O'Donnell told the Seanad recently that 11 properties at risk from floodwaters are being defended.
“In four of these properties, the floor level is below the level of water on the lake,” he said.
He also expressed concern about what would happen in the winter, particularly given the excessive rainfall this year, some 130% above average levels recorded since 1952.
The Tánaiste Micheál Martin is due to meet with residents and local public representatives at Lough Funshinagh on Wednesday May 22nd.
