Over €3m for 13 Active Travel schemes in County Roscommon

Roscommon is set to receive over €3million in funding under the Active Travel programme with Ballaghaderreen Town Development being awarded over €2million.
Today’s announcement will see €290m in funding being allocated to local authorities across Ireland to support the rollout of walking and cycling infrastructure in 2024.
In Roscommon 13 schemes will receive funding : Ballaghaderreen Town Development - €2,050,000; Ardsallagh Woods Active Travel Project - €100,000; Staff Costs AT Team - €160,000; Bealnamulla, Athlone, Active Travel Schemes - €60,000; Colaiste Chiarain Summerhill - €150,000; S N Cruachain Croghan - €100,000 and St Joseph's N.S Summerhill - €100,000.
The other schemes approved in Roscommon are St Pauls N.S Castlerea - €60,000; Carrick NS Ballinlough - €20,000; Scoil na Ainegeal Naofa, Carrick Road, Boyle - €50,000; St Michael’s & St Patrick’s N.S Cootehall - €50,000; St Attracta’s N.S Ballaghaderreen - €50,000 and €100,000 for a Pedestrian & Cycle Bridge in Roscommon Town.
Funding has also been allocated to Leitrim County Council which includes €95,000 for Rooskey Bridge Active Travel Measures; €60,000 for the Roosky Active Travel Scheme and €60,000 for for Scoil Mhuire NS in Carrick-on-Shannon.
Athlone will receive €730,000 for Footpath & Cycleway Improvements for six strategic routes with €5,000 also allocated to Athlone Community College.
Speaking at the announcement today, Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan said: “A key commitment in the Programme for Government and something that has been a cornerstone of our National Transport strategy over the past few years has been the dedication to making walking, cycling and wheeling safer and much more accessible throughout the country. It’s great that this year we will hit the €1bn investment mark.
“We are seeing the impact of this continued and substantial investment in our towns, villages and cities, where we are delivering large and small scale projects that are transforming where we live, making them much more attractive, safer and healthier. Many of the most attractive cities and towns in the world are the ones that prioritise active travel and now many more locations here in Ireland can join this list of great places to live and visit.”
The Active Travel Investment Programme for 2024 will fund approximately 800 new and existing Active Travel projects.
