Over 800 people waiting for driving test in County Roscommon

New figures show that the county has a 27 week wait for a driving test.
Over 800 people are waiting for a driving test in the county, according to the latest figures. The figures also show that the county has a 27 week wait for a test with just one full time tester available.
The Road Safety Authority has now launched an action plan aimed at reducing driving test waiting times for Roscommon to 10 weeks.
The plan sets out actions to bring the average waiting time down from 27 weeks to 10 weeks by early September 2025. There are 813 applicants awaiting a test at the moment in Roscommon while the test centre, which currently has one tester, will have a second one by September.
This RSA response comes amid unprecedented demand for driving tests, with 100,000 waiting to be tested nationally.
Measures in the plan include accelerated training of new testers through the use of additional training facilities and a revised approach to training enabling early deployment of new testers to centres.
It is intended to expand testing hours, including overtime for weekday evenings, Saturdays, and bank holidays — with tests running from 07:25 a.m. to 7 p.m..
To further alleviate pressure, new driving test centres will open in key areas bringing the national total to 60 centres.
A spokesperson for the RSA told the Roscommon Herald: “We are currently in the final stages of the contracting process, so we’re not yet in a position to confirm the exact locations of the new test centres. We will share full details, including opening timelines, as soon as agreements are finalised but it's our hope to have these operational within the coming weeks."
