The parents of Garda Kevin Flatley attended the annual Garda Memorial Day at Dublin Castle today, a day after their son was laid to rest.
Garda Flatley died last Sunday after being struck by a motorcycle at a speed checkpoint in north Dublin.
Speaking at the Garda Memorial Day, Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan described the day as “particularly poignant” following the recent loss of the Garda.
“My immediate thoughts are with his wife Una and their two children Aoife and Erin, his parents, his family and his friends,” he said. “I offer my condolences again to them at this deeply sad time.
Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said his tragic death served as “a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the dangers faced by gardaí daily in the course of their duties”.

Garda Flatley’s parents, Michael, who originally came from Clooncrim, Ballinlough, and Breda were in attendance at today’s ceremony.
Their son was laid to rest yesterday in his native Newcastle, Co. Dublin following Funeral Mass in Balbriggan.
