Popular County Roscommon woodlands amenity suffers extensive storm damage

Storm Éowyn has caused extensive damage in Mote Park with hundreds of trees knocked.
Storm Éowyn has caused extensive damage to the popular woodlands amenity, Mote Park, near Roscommon Town.
Hundreds of forest trees have been knocked across large tracts of this forest, which provides habitats for many species of wildlife, both common and rare.
On its Facebook page, Mote Park Conservation Group posted a message to all of the park’s recreational users.
“Unfortunately we have taken a massive hit in Mote Park as a result of the storm. All trails are closed and access roads from Roscommon town and Ballymurray are inaccessible except to local traffic.
“There is a huge body of clearance work to be undertaken by Coillte and it will be several weeks before access will be restored. Over time all of the cleared areas will be replanted.
“We will keep you updated as we hear from Coillte on the clearance work and let you know as soon as the trails reopen.
“On the positive side the areas containing the new play area and sculptures appear to be undamaged. Nature has a great way of restoring herself and we look forward to lovely walks soon again in Mote Park.”
The group posted drone footage of the storm damage on social media and you can watch a part of it here:
