The public meeting in support of the proposed new Lidl in Monksland attracted a large crowd, Cllr Emer Kelly has confirmed.
The meeting took place on Thursday evening of last week at the Monksland Community Centre.
Cllr Kelly, the newly elected chairperson for the Athlone Municipal District, said she along with other public representatives attended the packed meeting.
“There was great support from elected representatives right across the parties,” she said, adding that she was in favour of the development.
“I think it is very needed in the area. Everyone was in support of it last night, which just goes to show the necessity of it,” she said.
She said there was unanimous support for the development among politicians.
“Some politicians had to send their apologies, but there were representations from TDs, senators, and councillors. And right across the board, everyone was in agreement about supporting the proposal. It is positive that everyone is on the same page about this.”

The independent councillor said she hoped the development would receive the greenlight, and she urged people who wished to, to make a submission.
“Submissions are open until June 30th and people should definitely have a look at the application,” she said.
Lidl Ireland lodged a planning application for the new 2,358sqms discount store in Monksland with the council last month. The development is proposed for a site on lands south of the T-junction on the R362 and immediately south of the Joe Duffy car showroom.
The plans included a separate café/restaurant with a sheltered outdoor seating area as well as plaza areas. Under the plan, the site would be serviced by a new vehicle access route towards the south of the location.
The application provided for surface level car parking spaces, including electrical vehicle charging spaces, a setdown area for taxis, cycle stands, hard and soft landscaping, and other works.
A decision on the application is expected by July 21st.
