The pumping system at Lough Funshinagh will be switched later this week.

The interim flood relief scheme will see water pumped from Lough Funshinagh and discharged into the Cross River, located within the townland of Carrick in County Roscommon.

This involves 2.5 kms of piping bringing excess water from the lake, through the Curraghboy area to the Cross River. The pipes have been place on the surface of the land and the pumping will be controlled to ensure that no issues arise downstream.

Following the grant of planning permission from An Bord Pleanála, works got underway at the end of February.

Speaking to the Roscommon Herald this morning, OPW Minister Boxer Moran said he was looking forward to switching on the pumping system on Friday afternoon.

“It's welcome news I think for the whole of the country because everybody has been looking and watching what was going on at that lake,” he said.

“We're ready to switch on the pumps. We’re making sure that we delivered on what we promised for the people living around the lake and we are doing that on Friday. But the bigger issue is that we make sure that we have two years to get the overflow pipe planning application right and to make sure that we get the proper planning in place. I want to reassure the people that's my commitment I give to make sure that happens," he said.
