A presentation was made recently to the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre by the County Roscommon Historical and Archaeological Society of a replica of the front face of a late Bronze Age shield.
The shield was found by members of the Athlone Sub-Aqua Club in 1981.
The original is now in the collections of the National Museum of Ireland.
The shield, dating to about 3000 years ago, ties in well with the period of ritual, ceremony and massive gatherings at the Royal site of Rath Cruachain.
The design and decoration of the shield has origins in central Europe and shows the cultural connection between there and Ireland in the distant past.
