Roscommon councillor renews calls for water treatment plant upgrade

A local councillor has renewed calls for an urgent upgrade of the Castlerea Regional Water Supply treatment plant.

A local councillor has renewed calls for an urgent upgrade of the Castlerea Regional Water Supply treatment plant, citing ongoing issues with boil water notices and inadequate supply in recent years.

Fianna Fáil councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice said that the system has suffered from repeated boil water issues and shortages, largely due to turbidity in the underground water source.  He said that this makes it very difficult to treat water in large volumes.

Despite this, the supply from Longford Springs is regarded as a very good source, he stated.

The councillor said he had been calling for an upgrade of the treatment plant over a number of years, and believes the situation has reached a critical point following the recent water outage affecting Castlerea, Kilmurry, Ballintubber and parts of Trien.

Cllr Fitzmaurice paid tribute to local Irish Water staff, noting that crews have worked day and night to keep the supply going under challenging conditions.

“I hope that this upgrade will happen sooner rather than later,” he added.
