Roscommon councillors extend 'heartfelt condolences' to Garda Kevin Flatley’s family

Roscommon councillors have extended their condolences to the family of the late Garda Kevin Flatley, who was killed while carrying out a checkpoint in north Dublin on Sunday afternoon.
The 49-year-old, who lost his life after being struck by a motorcycle while operating a speed check, will be laid to rest later this afternoon.
At yesterday’s meeting of Roscommon Municipal District, Fianna Fáil councillor Marty McDermott said councillors would like to send their "heartfelt condolences" to Garda Flatley’s wife, two young daughters, family and colleagues. He said that Garda Flatley had strong Roscommon connections.
Cllr McDermott said it was terrible tragedy for a Garda endeavouring to keep everyone safe on our roads.
“His death is a terrible reminder of the dangers gardaí face. May Kevin Flatley recent please,” he said.
His fellow councillors associated themselves with the sentiments and Fianna Fáil councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice noted that the late Garda’s father originally came from Clooncrim in Ballinlough.
Garda Flatley's Funeral Mass will take place this afternoon at S.S. Peter and Paul’s Church in Balbriggan in north Dublin followed by burial with full Garda honours in his native Newcastle. Co. Dublin.
President Michael D Higgins, Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Tánaiste Simon Harris, Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan and several senior ministers will be among the large attendance.
His funeral service will be broadcast live on large screens outside the church and on the Garda Facebook page.
Predeceased by his sister Elaine and beloved husband of Úna and loving father of Erin and Aoife. He is very sadly missed by his adoring wife and daughters, parents Michael and Breda, brother John, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and neighbours.
His death notice stated that he was a dedicated member of An Garda Síochána and an avid member and coach of O’Dywers GAA local club in Balbriggan.
He is the 90th member of the force to be killed while on duty.
Garda Flatley served as a garda for 26 years and was with the Roads Policing Unit since 2018.
