Roscommon county council issues advice ahead of bonfire night
The uncontrolled burning of waste, particularly in bonfires, is illegal.
Roscommon County Council has issued safety advice ahead of bonfire night tonight, Tuesday.
The council stated, "If you're planning to celebrate Bonfire Night tonight (June 23rd) please remember to prioritise safety and the environment.
"Roscommon County Council does not wish to spoil traditions steeped in our history and culture, but must advise the public of the dangers of bonfires at these times, particularly when they are composed of waste materials.
"The uncontrolled burning of waste, particularly in bonfires, is illegal and releases toxic pollutants into the air, which are known to be damaging to our health and environment.
"Waste includes, but is not limited to - tyres, pallets, electrical goods, plastics, and household rubbish. Bonfires can release toxic pollutants that are harmful to both health and the environment.
"Instead of burning dispose of your waste responsibly, visit your local Civic Amenity Centre or Bring Bank Site."
