Roscommon Town Post Office services will move from the post office on the Square and re-open at Fleming’s Supervalu in Main Street on March 18th, a spokesperson for An Post has confirmed.
The spokesperson outlined that following the last day of business at the landmark post office building on March 14th, the post office will relocate and re-open in the new unit on Tuesday, March 18th at 11 a.m.
The former post office will remain closed on Saturday, March 15th as the services move to the new premises.
An Post announced early last year that the services at the post office in The Square, previously run directly by the company, would be replaced by a contractor run operation following a tender process.
The news that the landmark building in Roscommon Town, which opened as a post office in 1912, was closing had been met with widespread shock and anger locally.
At the time of the controversial announcement early last year, the company said that the change in business model of its post office in Roscommon Town would not in any way change the range or extent of the services offered by the company.
The historic building on The Square is set to be put up for sale following the move to the new location.
An Post has previously said that the company’s preference was that the building would eventually become a community facility.
